Highlights:

  • Microsoft introduces Copilot Pro, a paid AI service.
  • It features Microsoft 365 Integration, priority access to advanced AI models, and improved AI image creation.
  • Users can customize Copilot GPTs for personalized AI interactions.
  • Microsoft’s $13 billion investment is a potential driving factor behind the paid subscription model.

Microsoft has taken a step—perhaps ten—forward with Copilot Pro, the latest update in the Copilot experience, formerly known as Bing Chat. Microsoft shared this news on January 15, 2024, emphasizing the superior capabilities Copilot Pro brings to users.

On November 15, 2023, Microsoft announced a significant shift by rebranding Bing Chat as Copilot, signaling a major evolution in AI-powered interactions. It also emphasized its commitment to improving user experiences while maintaining the combined search and chat functionality familiar to Bing users.

Priced at $20 per month per user, Copilot Pro introduces a premium subscription tier aimed at delivering an enhanced AI service, complete with several features, including Microsoft 365 Integration, access to advanced AI models, Copilot GPTs, and more.

Key Features of Copilot Pro:

  • A Sublime AI Experience: Copilot Pro ensures integration across various devices, cleverly grasping your context on the internet, PC, and applications.
  • Microsoft 365 Integration: Subscribers receive entry to Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote on PC, Mac, and iPad, catering specifically to Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers.
  • Priority Access to Latest Advanced AI Models: Users of Copilot Pro enjoy exclusive access to state-of-the-art advanced AI models, including the innovative OpenAI’s GPT-4 Turbo. This access is prioritized during peak times for superior performance, and soon, users can switch between models for a more personalized experience.
  • New-and-Improved AI Image Creation: In Copilot Pro, the Image Creator from Designer ensures quicker image creation with 100 boosts per day. Users can anticipate heightened image quality, a concern highlighted by Google’s John Mueller, and compatibility with the landscape image format.
  • Customizable Copilot GPTs: The chatbot empowers users to construct their personalized Copilot GPT, designing it around specific topics and requirements. They can adapt Copilot’s responses to specific topics of interest, enriching the overall AI experience.

Will the Copilot Pro Walk the Talk?

While Microsoft talked a lot about AI in 2023, and it even got people interested in Bing again, we’re not sure if it’s really helpful for everyone. That might be why they’re making power users pay for it now.

Answering questions with Copilot Pro takes a lot of computer power and energy, and that costs money. Microsoft also invested a huge and controversial $13 billion in OpenAI, and now they need to make some of that money back. This might be an attempt to find a way to cover the costs from the people who use the chatbot to create Copilot GPTs on a regular basis.
