Unpacking Google’s Latest May 2022 Algorithm Update: What’s in Store for Us?

Google rolls out fresh algorithm updates several times each year. As SEO marketers, web developers, content creators, and project managers, we couldn’t be more excited about these changes.

Simply put, Google ups its game each year. In one update, the crawling and indexing capabilities may improve. In another, Google’s ranking sleuths may become even smarter. The landscape is always changing for the better.

This blog will break down the hype around the latest update. What should we expect? And how will the update change things for us? Let’s start digging deeper.

What’s a Core Update?

Google Search Central

On May 25, 2022, Google announced the release of a new core update, i.e., an update that improves its overall ranking processes. Core updates help make the search results a lot more relevant, refined, and smooth.

This is good news for everyone: web users, business owners, and marketing teams. Google’s latest update isn’t out yet. It’ll take 1–2 weeks to roll out fully. However, we already have an idea of the direction this update will take.

What Should We Expect?

Google’s crawling, indexing, and ranking abilities are already second to none. However, with every algorithm release, Google manages to raise the bar even more.

While the update isn’t out yet, we can confidently say that it’ll further improve the determinability of SERP rankings, generating even more tight, fair, and exciting competition.

Perhaps sites will appear differently on SERPs. Or maybe search queries will fetch more accurate results, making life easier for both web users and modern businesses. As we wait for the update to reveal itself, let’s take a look at some natural changes we should expect in the coming days:

  • And this is completely normal! Each time a new update rolls out, there are certain fluctuations. Some websites may notice temporary spikes and drops. Nothing of the sort should alarm anyone. Google itself notes that marketers often panic and hit the “fix” button before they even know what the problem is. Quick, unnecessary fixes will end up doing more harm than good since the fluctuations are temporary. Sit tight and wait for the update to crystallize.
  • Core updates aren’t hyper-specific. As their name suggests, they work on the “core”, i.e., they’re more broad than specific. Google’s overall ranking system will improve. You won’t notice any minute, small-scale changes. These updates are more macro than micro.
  • If your page drops, don’t assume you’re being penalized. This is not the case. As stated earlier, natural inclines and declines are to be expected. Your site and pages are being reassessed. Within a few weeks, the erratic curve (if there is one) will normalize.
  • Improvements are exciting! If there’s one platform that knows what it’s doing, it’s Google. Keep your SEO plans on track; we’re all in for something bigger and better. Google rarely disappoints.
